Lamar University – Sheila Umphrey Recreation Center and McDonald Gymnasium

The new Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is the campus hub for the majority of recreation and intermural athletics on campus. Encompassing more than 130,000 SF, the facility is used by 1,900 students weekly where they have access to fitness spaces, basketball courts, walking/running track, game room, rental shop, and other free activity rooms. The second level of the Recreational Center also is fully equipped and includes an indoor track and a training station to become the NEXT American Ninja Warrior.

 

Attached to the Recreational Center is McDonald Gym, a competition venue that hosts women’s volleyball games as well as some of the Greek games the Greek life organizations on campus. The facility includes:

• Retractable spectator seating for 500 fans.
  • Coaches offices for Cross Country, Tennis, Track & Field, and Volleyball
  • Separate locker and shower facilities for Lamar University’s Cross Country, Tennis, Track & Field, and Volleyball teams, event officials, coaches, and visiting teams
  • Athletic Training Suite which includes Athletic Training staff offices, an examination room, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation areas and hydrotherapy room
  • Student Athlete Lounge with couches, massage chair, flat-panel television and vending machines
  • Student Athlete Study Center with four private study rooms, a Computer Lab with 14 computer work stations, and the offices for two Athletic Academic Affairs coordinators

 

The new campus recreation center creates a place where exercise, sport, and leisure activities are blended into a facility with visual interest, functional layouts, and openness to the outdoors.
